For this Manchester group it's been a case of building triumph after disaster. Formerly known as Sub Sub, with a sizeable club pop hit in the UK at the turn of the nineties ("Ain't No Love"), then their recording studio containing various electronic gadgetry burned down resulting in a band rethink and name change. What eventually emerged was this self-produced debut of intense melancholic acoustic guitar-based brilliance recalling flashes of mid-period Smiths, Syd Barrett via The La's, Echo And The Bunnymen, and the defiant hard-won optimism of the Verve's 'Urban Hymns'. A magnificent British guitar record.
