For his first solo album, Clean/Bats/Magick Heads songwriter Robert Scott ventures into new territories of lo-fi experimentation, producing a minimal, largely instrumental record with a distinctively South Island feel. Enlisting help from Port Chalmers pals David Kilgour and Greg Cairns on the handful of more familiar Nun-style pop songs, and with multi-instrumentalist Nigel Bunn contributing horn, clarafife and tape effects to other tracks, Scott himself plays a dozen-odd instruments over the album’s nineteen tracks, which range in feel from introspective and at times a little bleak to gentle melodies and straight up optimism. A great wee listen.
