Sir Arthur Sullivans orchestral works have never been better served on disc than on this sparkling new collection from Richard Hickox and the BBC PO. The youthful Irish Symphony reveals a composer indebted to Mendelssohn, effectively scoring a rich melodic vein that was to prove irresistible in the latter collaborations with Gilbert. The suite from The Tempest made the 19-year old composed an overnight celebrity following its British premier in 1862, and In Memoriam is a lot less bleak than its title would suggest. A thoroughly enjoyable collection.
