Who would have thought that stoned slacker country music from Auckland would strike such a chord with New Zealand music fans? This self-released debut EP from Cassette (it's a CD) has sold out of its first pressing, and the boys are off to Australia to test their fortunes in those much bigger pastures. Simplicity is the key for Cassette. Frontman Thom Watson (HLAH) writes melancholy moments and pop songs so catchy they'd be all over the mainstream media with a bit of spit shining and marketing muscle. Instead, they'requite happy languishing in lo-fi indie charm and cred, drawing comparisons ranging from Harvest period Neil Young to 'alternative country' cool guy Sparklehorse. Good honest music, excellently arranged and recorded, with even a touch of cicada song for back porch authenticity.
