With his debut album Paradigm Shift, Wellington musician Rhian Sheehan marries acoustic instrumentation to space-age electronic programming and creates a sound all of his own. From its opening moments on in, the album is awash with synthesised soundscapes, samples and sound effects, underpinned with crisp drums and driven by emotive melodies. Lushly arranged and exquisitely produced, Paradigm Shift takes listeners on a journey through Rhian's musical mindscape, its songs gelling together nicely as a complete singular vision. Crisp beats abound on this downbeat treat, on occasion being stripped right back to reveal gentle acoustic meanderings, and on others enhanced by guest vocals from former Nomad collaborator Lotus. A rich and rewarding local listen.
