Following up on two extremely successful self-released EPs of dubby downbeat music, Auckland's Sola Rosa (aka Andrew Spraggon) widens his musical scope for this, his debut album. This time round Spraggon delves deep into the record collection to assemble a sample-laden smorgasbord of lounge and jazz-flavoured downbeat tracks. It's a veritable 'around the world in 55 minutes', as tracks take leads from exotic latin horns and rhythms, eastern percussion or Hawaiian slide guitar. Other tracks are purely jazz in feel, such as the wonderfully titled 'King Of Hush', with a slap-happy samplerdelic style akin to that of Jacknife Lee or Mr Scruff. Not that this is a purely sample-based record. Spraggon himself comes from a live band background and plays a multitude of instruments throughout, and he also enlists funky friends from Auckland acts SJD, Token Village and Pain'sPeople to help out - even drummer Dino from HDU! Well arranged and produced, slow, slinky and super cool, Solarized is an accomplished album of international standard.
