Having profiled some of the dance music world's leading DJs with theirlong-running DJ Kicks series, German label !K7 had to look no further thantheir home country to spotlight one of the leading crews in contemporarycontinental club jazz - Compost Records recording group and DJ tag team theTrby Trio. Together and separately, as producers, remixers and DJs, thetrio of Rainer Trby, Christian Prommer and Roland Appel have produced someof the finest moments in European 'nu jazz' since way back when it was stillcool to call their music acid jazz. And they're not afraid to show off theirskills. Thrown into this Kicks mix are several of the Trio members' owntracks including two Trby Trio tunes (the excellent new 'High Jazz', and aheavyweight Zero db remix of 'Galicia'), one by Prommer and Appel as FaunaFlash, and another by the pair recording with Peter Kruder as Voom:Voom. Elsewhere there's smooth UK soul from Block 16, a great spoken word afroshuffle borrowed from French label Yellow's Africanism project, West Londonartist Afronaught's storming broken beat anthem 'Transcend Me', Modaji's'One And The Same' given a stonking disco makeover at the hands of Japanesegroup Jazztronik, and Tim Hutton's 'Colours' given a folk/funk/Cuban bigband crossover feel by Freeform Five. It's a jazz / house / latin / breakbeatfusion thing of topmost quality - the perfect stopgap until the long overduedebut album from the Trby Trio themselves, and a storming mix CD in it'sown right.
