It's a new album from Blackalicious at last, with Chief Xcel and Gift Of The Gab still taking their lyrically dexterous brand of hip hop to the world in fine style, this time with major label backing (MCA) and stellar cast of guests and friends (Gil Scott-Heron, Charlie 2NA & Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5, Lateef, Keke Wyatt, Saul Williams, Jaguar Wright, Rakaa & Babu of Dilated Peoples, Ben Harper). The conscious soul of Blackalicious is still firmly intact, the main change here comes via a more commercial soulful approach to their overall sound, with the beats taking on a more relaxed almost skanking feel. But don't despair fans, the band still sound phat - Xcel and Gift are in top form, the weighty guest list adds plenty of credibility, and the more open grooves fit their natural freestyle approach. If you're a hip hop fan and down with De La Soul, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5 and the like, or a pop/soul fan into the likes of Spearhead, this is well worth checking. Recommended. Playing Auckland Feb 3rd and 4th 2004.
