Yes it is as good as the hype suggests, the band have matured quite dramatically, both in songwriting terms and in the way they work as a unit, creating a fine debut which balances their innate hard rocking nature with the more reflective side of their personalities. As you'd expect from their previous EPs this album has an irresistible and youthful energy, but its real strength comes from the dynmaic set of songs within, bursting with melody and originality not usually associated with a band so young. Of course there are glimpses of the influences resulting from the two famous fathers (particularly Neil Finn in the more reflective numbers), but it's not a bad influence to have, and frankly when the album is this good - who cares? Due for release in Australia as well, Flying Nun have hit paydirt with this puppy - NZ rock has never sounded so good. Recommended.
