While the idea of Blur frontman Damon Albarn taking his melodica to Mali to make a few 'ethnic' recordings might set off alarm bells (well it did to me anyway), this record is actually quite amazing. Relegating himself largely to the role of producer-come-facilitator, supplying sympathetic dub, electronica and beat based backing while kora player Toumani Diabate, Niger-blues guitarist Afel Bocoum, vocalist Kasse Mady Diabate, and numerous accomplices do their thing. Actually this description is rather flippant - this album has been superbly conceived and executed by Albarn, the contemporary backing has a gritty lo-fi aesthetic to it, sitting perfectly with groove-based music creating process of the musicians involved. A worthy cause (procedds from this album go towards Oxfam's ongoing programme in Mali) and stunning music make this an experiment to cherish, with an appeal far wider than it's 'world music' title would suggest (actually any open minded dub fan should be all over this). Recommended.
