Album number fifteen or sixteen from the long-serving alt-rockers known as Sonic Youth, and it's probably there best since their magnificent 1988 masterpiece 'Daydream Nation'. Now a quintet (long standing cohort Jim O'Rourke has been added as an 'official' member), and following on from where the very underrated 'NYC Ghosts & Flowers' left off, 'Murray Street' (named after the location of their NYC studio) finds the band (particularly key figure Thurston Moore) attacking the recording process with renewed vitality. The result is a cooly assured slice of sophisticated contemporary rock, with the trademark discordance toned down in favour of a more developed sense of song structure, recalling at times the dynamic interplay of legendary New York outfit Television. Jim O'Rourke further enhances with his sympathetic recording ear, making for an engaging and thrilling (if somewhat subtler) listen, while the eight-minute epic 'Rain On Tin' is Sonic Youth at their mesmerizing best. A stunning record from a band that cotinues to redefine modern alternative rock with uncalculated ease. Recommended.
