2002 continues to be the year where New Zealand hip hop has come of age - releases from Deceptikonz and P-Money, Che Fu with 'album of the year' at the NZ music awards - and now comes the excellent debut from the Dubious Bros (aka Chris Macro and Tyna Keelan). With a definite cinematic slant to their beats, this is a surprisingly developed and sophisticated album, aimed more at the 'heads' than those searching for party tunes, this fine album sits squarely been the turntablist production of P-Money and the swagger of the Deceptikonz. Plenty of guests on the mic add further variation, while tracks such as 'Dubious Style', 'Johnny & Jenny', 'Rage' (featuring Major Flavours' DJ Sirvere), 'Lisa' and 'The Accident' are quite outstanding. If you're into the likes of Blackalicious, De La Soul and the like, and you want to check out some fine Aotearoa hip hop - grab this puppy. Recommended.
