Whether by design or accident Coldplay's debut 'Parachutes' took the world by storm, seducing a legion of jaded pop fans, and spawning many a sensitive acoustic-based imitator. After such a stunning debut, the burden of expectation on Chris Martin and Coldplay for this their second album is huge, yet within the first couple of listens it quickly becomes obvious that the band as a unit have come a long way, in the process making an album that is quite simply beyond comparison to their earlier work. Expansive, evocative, delicate, dramatic, this album launches Coldplay into the world of superstardom they were always destined for, alongside (maybe replacing) Radiohead and U2. Whatever your pop music taste - this is one of THE releases of 2002, miss it at your own peril. Recommended. In Q Magazine's Top 50 albums of 2002, Mojo Magazine's Top 40 of 2002 and Spin Magazine's Top 40 of 2002.
