An ordained minister, proclaimed 'king of rock 'n' soul', explosive live performer, Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame member and Atlantic recording artist in the '60s (alongside the likes of Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles), Solomon Burke is the possessor of a fine voice - equal parts gospel and gruff soul growl. Having faded into relative recording obscurity in the late '70s, it has taken the rogue blues label Fat Possum to bring this soul great back into the limelight again with this stunning album. Produced live in the studio by Joe Henry (a marvelous singer / songwriter / arranger in his own right), with guest appearances from Daniel Lanois (U2, Robbie Robertson, etc) and The Blind Boys Of Alabama (on the sublime 'None Of Us Are Free'), plus a selection of songs supplied by the likes of Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Nick Lowe, Van Morrison, Dan Penn, Tom Waits and Brian Wilson, this delicious set shows off this great singer and his outstanding interpretive genius.
