The fifth instalment in London superclub Fabric's Fabriclive mix CD series comes from long serving trip-hop producer Howie B, who made his name in the early '90s on James Lavelle's Mo' Wax label and later with his own PussyfootRecords, going on to produce records for pop superstars like Bjork and U2. Fast forward to 2002 and Howie's new mix CD may be a surprise to those familiar with his downbeat productions - it would appear that he rocks Fabric with a bigger, beatier set of tunes than one might expect. Theopening track, a new one of his own produced under the name Skelf, is a dirty, rocking electro number that sets the tone for the storming mix that follows. From there it's headlong into a set of badass breakbeats and gruntydancefloor tunes that don't let up until the closer from Prince Far I, a deep dub cut that lowers the heart rate nicely. We're half a world away from where huge tunes like this rock Fabric on a weekly basis, but thanks to these great CDs you can enjoy a little bit of Fabriclive in the comfort of your own home. |
