Another new album from reformed dopper outlaw Steve Earle, and as any fan would expect - it's superb. His take on September 11th and resulting attitude push this album with genuine vigour, whether it's via the brooding 'John Walker's Blues" (empathetically written from the point of view of the sole American member of the Taliban), the punchy album opener "Ashes To Ashes", "Amerika v6.0 (The Best We Can Do)" (this albums belligerent "Copperhead Road"), the blustering Tex Mex workout "What's A Simple Man To Do" or the heartfelt "I Remember You" (with the sublime Emmylou Harris). Featuring a crack band, including the very underrated guitarist Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, this fine craftsmen goes from strength to strength, littering his work throughout with courageous and thoughtful dissent. Can't fault his productivity either, this is his sixth album in six years. I guess "driven" would be the perfect term. Recommended.
