Known as one of New Zealand's most gifted songwriters and leader of The Chills (the most successful band on the Flying Nun roster), the return of Martin Phillipps' masterpiece to the musical arena is a long-awaited and very welcome event. Recorded in the Surrey countryside by Pixies producer Gary Smith and originally released on Slash USA/Flying Nun back in 1990, featuring the #1 NZ single "Heavenly Pop Hit", 'Submarine Bells' topped NZ's album charts during the bands triumphant homecoming tour, and also hit the #1 spot on the US college radio charts. Critically acclaimed throughout the indie pop world, the passing of time just confirms the greatness of this stunning NZ pop masterpiece. Another very welcome reissue from the lovely folks at Flying Nun. Recommended.
