The latest album from local Wellington label Capitalrecordings comes from Black Seeds / Dub Connection front man Barnaby Weir, appearing solo as Flash Harry. The fruits of a whole lot of late nights spent experimenting in the production studio of local b.net station Radio Active, where he was working at the time, this debut Flash Harry adventure is a fabulously diverse look at Weir's seemingly boundless talents.
More a scrapbook of great ideas than a boring old singularly focussed singer / songwriter project, the album finds Weir mashing up bits and bobs of rock and roll, electro, hip-hop, funk, dub and whatever else he can lay hands on, lacing it with hooky vocals and strong songwriting sensibilities to come up with something clever, constantly surprising and ultimately unique. There's never a dull moment, from the anthemic "I Love Lo-Fi" and "Alright" to the crazy bingo call-sampling "Beverly", the dubby "Devotion", the funky downbeat "Don't Look Back" and gruntier "Chainsaw". With the help of friends including trumpeter Toby Laing, mixer Lee Prebble and remixer / masterer Jeremy "50Hz" Geor, Barnaby has produced a primo album that's well produced and chock full of memorable moments. With the award winning animated video for "I Love Lo Fi", plus a newie from the same animator for "Alright" about to screen, this is one fully flash package that's well worth checking out. Recommended.
