Latest in the Fabric set of dance compilations comes from UK's king of the airwaves and reknown taste maker John Peel - and it's an absolute beaut. Not known as a club DJ, this rare appearance at Fabric brought the house down, and based on this recording it is easy to see why. Pulling tracks from anywhere and everywhere, Peel throws together everything from the Bad Liver's bluegrass interpretation of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" to The Fall and Joy Division, to some delicious reggae (care of Don Carlos, Derrick Morgan and Don Carlos), thumping techno from Smith & Selway and Mark Smith Vs Safe'n'Sound, driving drum & bass action from MC DET, Elementz Of Noise and Sinthetix, a little blues courtesy of Jimmy Reed, funk / soul workouts (Trouble Funk, Maloko), our very own hard rockin' (and current Peel faves) The Datsuns, finally ending with the gloriously timeless Undertone's "Teenage Kicks". Compiled with impeccable taste, this vital and expansive set is a stunner. Recommended, and a fitting tribute to the great man. He will be missed. |
