Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, has followed up 2001's 'The Covers Album' with a return to the wonderfull heartwrenching songwriting of 1998's essential 'Moon Pix'. Featuring strong guest appearences from David Grohl (drums), Eddie Vedder (vocals) and some sublime violin from The Dirty Three's Warren Ellis. It is essentially, however, a one woman show. Marshall has tightened up her songwriting, exploring themes of loss and the desire for freedom, making 'You Are Free' a true listening "album". It sucks the listener in to an austere musical realm where her lyrics are naked, bold and unashamedly affecting, with her voice somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Beth Orton, and her songs sounding like an indie rock Lightning Hopkins. This music will bore the casual listener but nourish and uplift those who give it a chance. Recommended. Special price while stocks last.
