One of the truly great bands of our time Yo La Tengo exceded all expectations with their last album ('And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out', Matador, 1999) by searching out the more avant-garde and mellow elements of their sound. They found a lush indie vibe something like Lou Reed working with 'In A Silent Way' era Miles Davis. 'Summer Sun' works in the same vein but, almost unbelievably, is an even better album. Roger Moutenot's production is spot on, brewing a mix of intimacy and innovation. "Season of the Shark" may be the finest pop song ever set to a casio keyboard drum loop. While there is certainly plenty of talented musicians exploring sound in the same manner (see Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Doves), after 16 odd years Yo La Tengo are exuding ease at their job. This is a dark monster of a 'Summer' album, perfect for winter if you ask me. No slack indie band, this is a well constructed masterpiece, drifting through dreamy funk ("Moonrock Mambo"), jazzy postrock ("Let's Be Still"), droney pschadelia ("Beach Party Tonight") etc. None of this would matter without 13 great tunes played exceptionally well. It all hinges for me on Ira Kaplin's guitar playing. Like a mellow Lee Renaldo he ties up the arrangments with a subtle nod to the fact that these guys are still at heart an indie guitar band. Sublime stuff.
