The first release for de Clive-Lowe's Antipodean label is, quite logically, a compilation of his recent production work both under his own name and with other artists, as well as some remix work from him on other artists and vice-versa. The sound is very much on the West London jazz tip aka "broken-beat", with the emphasis on fairly complex instrumental work, as you'd expect. There are side-steps into house-based tracks though, notably the remix work courtesy of Phil Asher's Restless Soul outfit and DJ Spinna. The Restless Soul remix of Metiz' "Africa" is particularly good, taking its cue from Galaxy To Galaxy's seminal "Hi-Tech Jazz" on Underground Resistance. Other standouts include de Clive-Lowe's "Move On Up" and "Relax... Unwind", and Beatless' excellent "Life Mirrors" featuring de Clive-Lowe on keys. This is a great compilation for people who've enjoyed Mark's work over the last few years while he's been based in London, while jazz enthusiasts should dig his so-called "broken-beat" take on the sound. Nice sleeve from Wellington-based illustrator Otis Chamberlain and designer Spence too. Recommended. You'd do well to keep an eye out for Vol.2 as well, it's a mix CD coming soon from DJ Chris Cox.
