The Coleman Sessions is a collection of contemporary New Zealand popular rock bands, captured in live recordings at Aucklands York St studio and compiled by nationwide radio station Channel Z. Channel Z is proud to play 30% NZ music and is the only commercial station to feature a 100% NZ content music week to celebrate NZ music month. Named for high profile Channel Z host James Coleman, the collection includes a wide range of acts with the likes the Black Seeds, Pacifier, P-Money and The Feelers sharing the billing. As live recordings, the album works well, with good sound quality yet retaining the raw clarity and immediacy of live performance. The pace is mostly fast and kicking, helped along by tracks like Nirvana by Elemeno P, but varies through to the more thoughtful Staring at the Ocean by the Heavy Jones Trio. Remarkable contributors include Pan Am with Long Grass, Eight with Shift, Aint That Bad by Cassette and Describing Song by Goldenhorse. At seventeen tracks, the Coleman Sessions is excellent value as a whos who of today's big players as well as the up-and-comers. Recommended.
