Despite Damon Albarn's world music and Gorilla flirtations, and the departure of long-time guitarist Graham Coxon, this latest album from Blur is exceptional - a playful, eccentric and marvellously developed body of work. Aided by producers William Orbit, Ben Hillier and Norman Cook the album is surprisingly funky musically (funky in a Talking Heads, late Clash, Big Audio Dynamite kind of way) with guitars replaced to a degree with dub, tape loops, keyboards and the like. But don't despair fans because Albarn has also contributed a delightful and varied set of songs, songs that could only come from Blur. The result is a highly original and inspired pop album that should find them plenty of new fans without alienating the old - a rare and special pop feat. Recommended.
