Filling the gap left by the impossibly slow work rate of Portishead, Goldfrapp's 2000 debut 'Felt Mountain' was a lush expansive romantic pop masterpiece, seducing even the harshest "trip hop" critic and selling a cool half million copies.
2003 sees a greatly changed and altogether more edgy pop landscape and to their credit singer songwriter Alison Goldfrapp and partner electronics whiz Will Gregory have neatly side-stepped (although not ignored) a 'Felt Mountain Part 2', instead opting for a more experimental approach - switching from freaky angular rock-meets-electronica songs in the mould of Grace Jones' 'Nightclubbing', Bowie's Berlin inspired 'Low' and Iggy Pop's 'The Idiot', to their now trademark lush, utterly sensuous, torch-based ballads in the mould of Kate Bush.
While this combination of cold/dark and sensuous/horny may seem at cross purposes, the final result is an intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable listen which surely any open minded fan must applaud. After all sometimes change is for the better - just ask Radiohead. Recommended. |
