Not the background music you might expect from something titled 'Elevator Music', the Truby Trio make a quality brand of what some term Nu-Jazz, combining live instrumentation with brilliant production, something weve come to expect from Compost records. Rainer Trubys co-members Roland Appel and Christian Prommer are also part of the Jazzanova set up, and though most of their output treads similar ground, as the Truby Trio they take on a more downbeat and musical approach. Universal Love is built around a Larry Mizell composition, and features a tidy vocal from Marcus Begg, live bass and fender Rhodes, creating a lush slice of electronic goodness. Bad Luck is another fine vocal cut, with a stunning contribution from fellow Compost signing Joseph Malik, and the bands outstanding recording of vocals is further highlighted by tracks with Marcia Montez, Alegre 2003, and Concha Buika, Jaleo. The Trio certainly dont disappoint on the instrumental cuts either, with New Music and A Go Go both brilliant explorations of rhythm and sound. 'Elevator Music' certainly has a wide appeal, fans of many musical styles will find much to enjoy with it working as both a downbeat affair, and an ambitious slice of studio experimentation, and with so much of the music in this genre so "easy listening" it becomes easily forgotten, the Truby Trios LP captures your attention and holds it, making for one of the finest Compost release's this year.
