A funky slab of machine-soul drum&bass from Fabio, one of the true originators of the
sound along with his good friend and longtime DJ partner Grooverider. Regarded by many as the best drum&bass DJ in the world myself included he's one of the only ones to never have played a New Zealand date, sticking with his UK residencies, including Friday nights at Fabric of course, and European and US tours. This mix covers a hella big ground, running from the amen break-driven old school sound of Calibre's "Venus & Mars" for openers through to Social Security's anthem "Take Me Away" with its "three-oclock in the morning" refrain and onto the middle part of the mix with that wonderful swinging Brazilian feel of Danny Cs "The Mexican" and DJ Marky & XRS' remix of Bebel Gilberto's "So Nice" and closing with tracks from hot drum&bass producers du jour Influx Datum and High Contrast. Fabio's sound is a remarkably soulful, funky affair, but with a kick like a mule, probably the closest anyone can get to recreating the emotion of good Detroit techno within a drum&bass context. An absolutely essential purchase for any and all drum&bass fans and, as Fabio mix CDs are rare like rocking horse poop, a great buy from anyone who's even remotely interested in DJ and dancefloor culture full stop. This man is The Don. Highly recommended. |
