It's album number seven from the British musical chameleon known as Tricky, and 'Vulnerable' is easily his most complete "pop" work since his wonderful genre defining 'Maxinquaye' album. Released through his own Brown Punk Records 'Vulnerable' allows Tricky to pursue his unique musical vision at will - apparently there are two further albums due for release in 2003 - and the result is an extraordinary album that finds Tricky back to his challenging best. With new vocal muse, delicious Italian chanteuse Costanza Francavilla, the songs here are textured soundscapes of jaunting beats, stirring guitars and gorgeous voices that resonate with its maker's wilful fusion of rock, electronica and hip hop - from the wildly inventive dub-sonic sound of "Stay" to the haunting grooves of "Hollow", the shimmering interpretation of the Cure's "The Love Cats" and the off-kilter beats of first single "Antimatter". Maybe it was recording in LA, or perhaps new singing partner Francavilla that has brought Tricky back to his beligerent inventive "pop" best - whatever the reason "welcome back" I say. Recommended.
