The growth of urban Pacific soul and funk music continues apace as shown admirably by this snapshot mix of Sugarlicks-affiliated artists from Auckland DJ Manuel Bundy. I say snapshot because 'Ultrasound' captures these artists at studio moments in time, whereas you always get the feeling that a lot of New Zealand's soul and funk bands and singers really thrive and show their true colours in a live setting. Having said that, the fifteen tracks here all show a depth and maturity that's heartening, and Manuel's
unobtrusive mix and intelligent sequencing mean that they're easily digested and enjoyed
in a CD format.
Auckland's Sugarlicks label has developed a name for itself thanks to its supportive nurturing of artists, DJs and performers and that warmth shines through 'Ultrasound', and hopefully it won't be too long before we see debut LPs from several of the artists here. Props go to Murk 108, One Million Dollars, Nat Rose and ThisInformation for their stutteringly-soulful, funk-driven, jazz-flecked work on this CD. A great buy for ex-pats all around the world and a must-have for soul music lovers and NZ music fans alike. If you have enjoyed recent releases such as Fat Freddy's, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Rhombus, Nesian Mystik, etc check this out. Highly recommended. |
