Smoke Notes

With this his fourth album, Stefan Betke has made a slight departure from the glitchy electronic dub he has become renowned for. This is a welcome change as his last LP lacked the originality of his previous work. A change of labels to Mute sees the German bass-meister in collaboration mode, working with MC/Producer Fat Jon to produce a neat hybrid of smoked out hip hop flows and soundscapes punctuated by cataclysmic bass drops and electronic clicks and rattles. The lyrics are as cosmic as the music pondering time and space, generally matching the mood and music perfectly. Betke has also expanded his range and in hiring saxophonist Thomas Haas plus outstanding bassist August Engkilde opened his own distinctive sound to a whole new world of possibilities. Altogether it creates a far more human face for a scene that has recently seemed devoid of ideas. Check the fusion on "Green Is Not Green-Yellow", the perfect embodiment of organic and digital, or "Arena" which sounds like hip hop twenty years from now. A welcome return to form. Recommended.
