Coming from the same stable as the excellent Sideways and Sideways Too compilations and SJD album (NZ label Round Trip Mars Records), Phelps & Munro's debut 'Slowpoke' has much to recommend it. Not a duo as the band name might suggest, this inspired debut is the work of one man - Gerald Phillips (with the aid of guitar and the trusty MPC 2000). The music is a warm fusion of electronic beats and rock guitar, kind of like the Aphex Twin, Autechre or Squarepusher being gently cloaked in a "post rock" blanket. The quality and consistency is so high it's hard to pick favourites, but I have to say title track "Slowpoke" wins me over entirely. Other tracks to check out include "Glib", "Ditto", the sonic assault that is "Busey", and the bass-injected "Slap Me Stu", although at fourteen rewarding tracks the whole package is a treat. Skillfully mixed and mastered by Angus McNaughton at Aotearoa Records Studio, the tracks flow so well together it really is a whole album listen, and those who are willing to give this clever album time will be richly rewarded. Distributor Flavour quite accurately states Slowpoke is "best listened to repeatedly with full attention, this isnt a record that gives it all up on the first date". The increasingly popular "choose your own cover" design features, with various black and white views of a skinny and endearing dog. An album of genuine substance, 'Slowpoke' will appeal to indie rock and electronica fans alike, with particular interest to those who have enjoyed recent releases from NZ artists Jet Jaguar, Sola Rosa, Pitch Black and the like. Recommended.
