A beautiful and intoxicating record full of great songs and interesting from start to finish - not in 2003 you might say, yet with this her third album Nina Nastasia has created a small masterpiece you'll want to play over and over again. Recorded at Iain Burgess' Black Box studio in France by Steve Albini, and as you would expect captured beautifully by the Shellac frontman. Featuring Dirty Three's Jim White on drums and dominated by beautiful cello and viola, 'Run To Ruin' is a seemingly dark record that shows off a remarkable depth and warmth. Nastasia's hypnotic vocals appeal in the same way Mazzy Star or Cat Power do with intimate songs of decadence and the dreamlike escape from it. A cut like "Regrets" perfectly captures this with its story of lowlifes in New Mexico, or standout "The Body" with lyrics "One lock of your hair in my grip - tears on my lip, cut from my bit". This is unique and ultimately a highly rewarding listening experience for those who like their indie sound of the subtler variety. Listen to it with the lights out - go we dare you. Recommended.
