Twenty years after its initial release, "Tour De France" - a single showing Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider's obsession with cycling, the reformed Kraftwerk have remixed the original into a sprawling new album. This new piece continues to explore the bands deep felt interest in the relationship between civilisation and the technology it creates, a marriage between the future and the contemporary, a muted conceptual irony that mirrors the space in which the group make music - stepping away from reality to make a musical statement on reality. Being the group's first album in 17 years, some apprehension seemed not unfounded, yet throughout the 57-minute journey we are constantly reminded of the groups reputation and ability, in no way does this sound like a reformed 70's rock band churning out radio friendly songs to an audience that doesn't seem to care or know better. Sure the familiar sounds and rhythms of classics like "Autobahn" and "Trans Europe Express" are here, but this is a band still inspired by its creations. Throughout, the beautiful analogue melodies and filtered voices give way to gentle pulses and bleeps, combining in an atmospheric soundscape today's electronic pioneers would surely be proud of. They may be the robots but the warmth and organic feel on display hints at a group in complete creative control and at the start of a new era. A pleasant surprise, 'Tour De France' is the best Kraftwerk album since 'Computer World' and one of the most essential electronic releases so far this year. Recommended.
