Alongside Hamilton's The Datsuns, Evan Short and Matt Harvey (otherwise known as Concord Dawn) have tasted international success many New Zealand artists could only wish for, and now three albums in, their latest effort 'Uprising' is destined to be a huge success both internationally and on the local market. Two of the nicest guys you'd meet, they have turned Drum & Bass on its head in the last two years with a number of signings to UK labels and of course the huge success of their awesome "Morning Light" single which opens 'Uprising' - a track which features a mutated vocal and a stunning bassline that has demolished dancefloors worldwide and resulted in recent visitor to our shores, Klute, providing a remix. That song was signed to the Timeless label, whose sister label, Function run by heavyweight producer Digital have also signed "Tonite", another excellent tune showing the duos ability to adapt to a new setting in the highly progressive Drum & Bass scene.
Tribal drums clatter on "Zulu", a co-production with Cause for Concern's DJ Optiv, while NZ hip-hop's finest Scribe, shows up on "Get Ready". My favourite has to be the hard as hell Slayer sampling "Raining Blood", featuring the classic metal riff from "Reign In Blood" surrounded by slamming Drum & Bass breaks. Elsewhere "Don't Tell Me" features Salmonella Dub's front man Tiki on vocals and beats. Throughout the album Concord Dawn prove the international success theyve tasted is no fluke - 'Uprising' is world class. And with more quality Drum & Bass from the likes of Bulletproof & Fabel Music also on the market, the future is looking very rosy for the genre in New Zealand. Recommended. |
