This month's installment from London's Fabric nightclub and their brilliant resident DJ crew comes from London-based production duo Amalgamation Of Soundz, and it's an impressive effort. Considering this is the 23rd mix CD in this series, this is pretty much the first to explore more downbeat and ambient territory to any great effect.
The first half of the mix has a host of acts who I've never heard of, all of which have a spacious, cinematic feel that avoid turning into sonic tedium quite nicely. The mix switches at about track nine, one of the remixes of Future Sound Of London's classic "Papua New Guinea" from 1993, as remixed into further swooshing, ambience by the band themselves in 2001. From here things go quickly into broken-beat and then into nicely chugging "proper" techno from Europe. The progression is handled very, very well and, while a bit rushed due to the 74-minute context of a mix CD, it shows how AOS would run a live DJ set in a club or club-lounge environment to good effect.
So once again, the Fabric series comes up trumps with an enjoyable, intelligent mix CD. Can this club do no wrong? It seems not. Recommended listening (along with the previous 23 releases!). |
