A man for whom drama seems to be second nature, DMX returns with another solid LP of pure no frills hip-hop. The title 'Grand Champ' can be seen as either a bold statement on DMXs behalf, or more realistically as a reference to mans best friend, the dog. Whatever the answer, as usual DMX is happy to let his gruff tone and street credibility speak for itself. The reflective My Life opens proceedings; a tough tale of life in the hood, next up Where The Hood At features a tidy sample of Aretha Franklins Young Gifted & Black. Roc-A-Fella in-house beat provider Kanye West delivers the goods on Dogs Out, in which DMX confronts his long-standing rival Ja Rule. More of hip-hops finest pop up on Get It On The Floor produced by Swizz Beatz and Shot Down featuring the capable rap talent of 50 Cent & Styles P. The Ruff Ryders crew provide one of the albums finest moments on Were Back featuring bad girl Eve & Jadakiss, while another new school star Camron delivers a great rhyme on the angry We Go Hard. Its DMX that stands out throughout 'Grand Champ', an embodiment of barely controlled anger, lyrical talent and voice that grumbles and growls, coming across like a pitbull, ready to respond in any way to anything in his way. This album feels like a response to anyone that dared think DMX had fallen off, and what a response it is.
