Formerly of harmony trio The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield split the group after 1969s 'The Young Mods Forgotten Story', a brilliant album that hinted at a new direction, with production, composition and lead vocals all handled by Mayfield. His debut effort didnt just break the mould; it shattered forever what peoples perception of soul could be. Mayfield had already hinted at a more conscious and political approach on the later Impressions hits Mighty Mighty (Spade & Whitey) and Check Out Your Mind, yet with 'Curtis' he managed to create an intimate, intelligent and beautiful protest record unlike any before. (Dont Worry) If Theres A Hell Below Were All Going To Go opens with a chant to all races, pleading for togetherness through an epic symphony of wah wah guitar and effects before dropping into a typically subtle horn section and Mayfields trembling falsetto - it is a powerful slice of black pride rarely bettered. The Makings Of You is a love song of almost dreamy intimacy while We Are People Who Are Darker Than Blue again effects both soul and mind. 'Curtis' also contains the slamming funk classic Move On Up, a seventies standard that plays on the mind while moving the feet and the satirically brilliant Miss Black America. This album marked the start of a truly mind blowing period for mayfield, continued by such fabulous LPs as 'Roots' and the 'Superfly' soundtrack. This excellent reissue also features bonus tracks and a top remastering job - in other words what was already essential you now cant live without. Recommended.
