Flying Nun's new signing The Mint Chicks is the sort of band that should be on the label, noisy, brash and musically exciting, its rock & roll full of spastic quality, showing a wide range of influences yet managing to still sound fresh. The group have had three #1's on the BFM Top 10 chart, no easy feat, yet from the opening strains of "Post No Bills" it easy to see why, barely two minutes of gritty punk blares out of the speakers with Kody Nielson coming over like a cross between Perry Farrell and Tom Verlaine, the music pronouncing a mad urgency. Next up the title track is based around weird time signatures and guitar feedback, Ruban Nielson showing himself to be fully adept at guitar torture, both "The Son" and "Licking Letters" show a band completely in control, with strong musicality built on the back of constant gigging and recent support for the White Stripes on their Australian dates - "Licking Letters" in particular stands out as one of the best slices of NZ rock this year. In fact The Mint Chicks are that rare thing, a band that lives up to the hype and marketing notes, and a group that updates the blueprint laid down by NZs best - the Clean and Straitjacket Fits - and this excellent six track debut bodes well for a rich future. Right down to the abstract cover art, this is a surprising and riveting release. Recommended.
