Alongside the Orb, the Prodigy and Orbital, Underworld championed a very British take on electronic music, gaining huge success along the way, their sound taking in elements of everything from ambient to progressive house, techno to Balearic. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith re-formed Underworld in the early nineties after Underworld part 1 had disintegrated in the eighties, and thankfully this compilation as the title suggests completely ignores a period that can be basically summed up as crap. Techno DJ Darren Emerson joined the team providing a fresh new approach firmly aimed at the dance market, with the band signing to the legendary Junior Boys Own imprint they then released one of the best albums of the nineties, 'Dub No Bass With My Head Man'. From that LP Dirty, Spikee and Skyscraper are included here, standing as outstanding examples of post Acid House brilliance. The quality doesnt end there though, check the shimmering Rez, epic Dark & Long and dubbed out Cowgirl which all display a craftsman like quality. Another excellent LP arrived in the form of 1998s 'Second Toughest In The Infants', with Hyde vocalising on the single Pearls Girl, a formula that would also be used on the groups finest moment, the Trainspotting anthem Born Slippy. Of the bands later output King Of The Snake and 8-Ball are highlights and both are included here. As an anthology this album works as a historical discography - showing the groups progression and constant evolution - and doesnt fall flat as a "best of" either, especially considering the way some of the material was originally released - not all the tracks are taken from LPs, with some of the better moments previously only available as singles or on soundtracks. One of the most important groups in British music in the last ten years, this compilation should be on the shelf of any discerning music fan. Recommended.
