Smoke Notes

German down tempo label Stereo Deluxe has slowly established itself in the last few years as a consistently challenging imprint, managing to push what can be a non-descript and cliched sound into much richer territory, not unlike their Austrian counterparts Compost records. Trio Eletrico were an early signing who have gone on to become the labels flagship outfit, making soulful and thoughful music with an edge that a lot of this material sometimes misses. Not to be confused with the similar Truby Trio, Trio Eletrico consist of Peter Heider, Peter Hoppe & Thomas G.Eckert, with all three sharing songwriting and production duties and playing a few instruments for good measure. Their sound varies from the Benson meets Kuti jazz of Mini-Poodle-Circus to the Latin tinged Hip-Hop beats of Por Donde Vas. Their work with vocalists is at it's best on the organ led Cry-Baby, which features Stefan Angele and manges to be both the blues and dub all at once, and Somewhere Behind, a moody number featuring Steffi Pop. The album is dominated by sinewy grooves and spacious dub-fueled atmopshere lending every song the texture and depth that is essential in quality downbeat work and the result is a pleasure from start to finish. Fans of Thievery Corporation, Shantel, K&D, Waiwan, the Hotel Coste series, and such like, will find much to enjoy on this truly sublime album. Recommended. Import title in stock now.
