Typically expansive compilation from London's finest re-issue imprint, Soul Jazz, this time focusing on the much under-rated world of British Jazz-Funk from the years 1974 to 1982. British R&B and funk has always been dominated by its American cousin and the seventies was no different, yet as the fine people at Soul Jazz demonstrate, it has not meant that the UKs huge Black community hasnt continually made solid music. Hi Tensions opener from which the album's title is taken is a Cymande-like up-tempo funk number, full of Conga and with a great chorus to boot. A group that did share some US success, Heatwave provide one of the albums standout moments with Put The Word Out, a brilliant funk tune from the middle of the disco era. Other highlights are provided by The Real Thing with Children Of The Ghetto and Atmosfears awesome Dancing In Outer Space, a dance floor classic that wouldnt be out of place in a modern house set. Another band that gained a worldwide fanbase, Imagination, provide the slick Burning Up, an after hours club classic with a piano riff so catchy youll be humming it to your friends. The whole package is complimented with informative liner notes, and includes rare photos and the usual Soul Jazz sound quality. If you thought that the Funk was something reserved for the people of Philadelphia or Detroit, then think again because the 'British Hustle' was certainly where it was at. Recommended.
