Londons Soul Jazz is a label born out of the Sounds Of The Universe store in the citys Soho suburb, their Dynamite series has fast established itself as the best reggae compilation series available, with every volume delivering obscure classics and essential cuts - guaranteed. Edition Six is certainly no different, touching on everything good and Jamaican, with tracks dating as far back as 1970 and as recent as this year (2003). Dancehall has made a big impact globally in the last two years and the album opens with Alozade & Hollow Points Under My Sensi, which rides the Clappas rhythm released by Greensleeves earlier this year. Two stunning slices of traditional seventies reggae are up next, Johnny Osbournes sweet Ready Or Not and the super rare Lady Lady from Cynty & The Monkeys. Prince Mohammeds Winston Riley produced Come Mek We Rub A Dub is a lovely laidback slice of romanticism that manages to sound like both Curtis Mayfield and Trojan era Jimmy Cliff. Sly & Robbies classic eighties period is represented with the proto-Dancehall Give Her The Credit from the unstoppable Ragga star Papa San, no longer will you wonder where that classic sax riff is from, while seventies dub was never better than Yabby Yous brilliant Conquering Lion, a song no one should be without. As youd expect the consistency never drops and with other artists including Dennis Brown, I Roy and Tenor Saw you cant really go wrong, the liner notes are diverse and informative making the whole package a pleasure, perfect for a cup of tea, a read and a good listen. Soul Jazz is a label run by people who love music, and that passion is constantly reflected in their outstanding output. A superb compilation which will thrill not only reggae fans. Recommended.
