This is an excellent debut from this talented young San Francisco based (originally from Houston, Texas) singer-songwriter who has also made a name as part of the folk-pop group The Be Good Tanyas. Originally conceived as a self-produced collection of basement tapes and demos, Holland began selling 'Catalpa' at shows and via the internet on the advice of friends and fans. Quickly taking on a life of it's own, and receiving plenty of exemplary critical acclaim (check this one: "she does for folk, fiddle and country what Billie Holiday did for blues, wrapping her unforgettable voice around each note and taking it somewhere you wouldn't have ever thought of; though the minute you hear her, you realize it was the only right place the note could go") the album was signed to punk label Epitaph's Anti imprint (also home to the recent efforts of Tom Waits - who incidentally rates this as one of his favourite albums of 2003). A multi-instrumentalist of some repute (piano, fiddle, guitar, banjo, ukulele) and with a knack for writing delicious spooky folk-like lullabies which perfectly suit her fluttering multi-octave voice, Holland has delivered an album of outstanding beauty which compares frequently and favourably with legends and contemporaries alike, including Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Tom Waits, Nanci Griffith, Gillian Welch, Cat Power, Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) and The Handsome Family. And she whistles in perfect pitch too. Recommended.
