Smoke Notes

Ah, the battered cross that is deep house. It's fallen firmly into disrepair over the last few years as too many soundalike percussion tracks, using too little elements of any interest, have driven it to being a boring joke, with the main catchphrase being "Dad Dance". An appropriate term seeing as it seems to be mainly white males in their late 20s and early 30s that are propagating the myth that deepness equates to "jacking", that being basically a kick-drum, a hi-hat, a preset bassline and a quickly pilfered and filtered disco sample. Kenny Hawkes, alongside good friend Luke Solomon (one half owner of the Classic label with Derrick Carter) ran Space in London's Bar Rhumba for five years, pushing the boundaries of what was considered house music. Space closed down in early 2002 due to dwindling numbers and a general malaise affecting the dancefloor. With this mix, Hawkes bravely attempts to inject some life into what is essentially a dead horse, successfully using more techno flavours from artists like Octave One, Gideon Jackson and Aril Brikka and also adding in some interesting progressive house and trance-like elements. It works to a fairly high degree too, but it's just such a funny things to listen to unfolding. Especially by the last part, where any deep house pretensions have been thrown out the door in favour of a more rigorous tech-house feel, with some real punch and bounce giving proceedings a bit of momentum otherwise lacking. A good mix from Hawkes, that should give house music fans something to smile about. Recommended. Import tile in stock now.
