Rated by many seventies critics as the funkiest album of all time, 'Rejuvenation' sounds as good today as it did upon release in 1974. The Meters had already established themselves through their seminal early material that blurred the lines between rock and r&b, including the classic Look-Ka Py Py & Struttin albums, as well as Rejuvenations excellent predescessor Cabbage Alley, and with this album the group moved from the singles dominated format of their previous output into the concept album structure already pursued by their contemporaries such as Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes and the Temptations, resulting in the sort of record you listen to from start to finish. Sure the standout funk numbers are included, in the form of the magnificent Just Kissed My Baby and the equally sinewy Hey Pocky A-Way, yet the epic qualities of It Aint No Use and the sublime feeling of Africa show a band at the peak of their considerable powers, and remember this is the band Mick Jagger once described as the best motherf**king band in the world. Elsewhere both People Say and Whatcha Say set the bar for funk bands to aspire to, and their influence has spread far beyond the realm of Black music. Allen Toussaint's production is also exceptional, his rich New Orleans pedigree the perfect compliment for the telepathic like interplay - the earthy recording letting the quality of the music speak for itself. Now in a remastered edition complete with extensive liner notes, one of the finest albums of the seventies is now even more essential. Recommended.
