One is always a little sceptical when the music industry lays down it's "latest big thing" claims, especially when that "latest big thing" happens to be a sixteen-year old English lass releasing an album called 'The Soul Sessions'. But sceptics beware, this is a very good debut from a young singer with abundant talent and a genuine empathy for the material she is interpreting (I think maturity beyond her years is the over-used term here). Actually it is more than natural talent that make this album work. Recorded quickly over a handful of days (echoing the modus operandi of legendary soul production houses such as Stax) at studios in Miami, New York and Philadelphia, utilising soul legends Betty Wright and Willie "Little Beaver" Hale, plus credible contemporaries Angie Stone and ?uestlove (with The Roots), the resulting sound is immediate and with a thoroughly authentic southern tinge. The tracks themselves are very well selected - rather than rehash the usual set of soul standards time has been spent finding quality lesser-known works which compliment Stone's vocal inflections perfectly - including an excellent interpretation of The White Stripes' "Fell In Love With A Boy". So, all up, a very good album which is certainly deserving of the surrounding hype, and in Joss Stone the discovery of a talent with an immense future. If you enjoy the legendary southern soul sound of Memphis, singers such as Bonnie Raitt, or simply "real songs played on real instruments", check out this excellent debut. Recommended.
