Smoke Notes

Not Colemans debut as the title may suggest, but recorded in between the infamous Free Jazz sessions and Ornette On Tenor (which was recorded a mere two months after this wonderful album), and previously only available on the awesome but expensive Beauty Is A Rare Thing box set. This session recorded in 1961 shows Coleman at the peak of his considerable powers and is also notable for the inclusion of Scott LaFaro, the gifted bassist who you may be familiar with on Bill Evans very best trio music, and whose life would be tragically cut short just as he was attaining greatness. All four songs are alphabetically coded, and while the music is not as radical as that on Free Jazz, it still shows the consistent development and innovation apparent in nearly all of Colemans work. Check Don Cherrys sinewy opening on W.R.U., almost middle eastern in context, LaFaros low-register bassline slowly evolves into a sitar like solo from Coleman, drummer Ed Blackwell's propulsive stick work a mixture of power and sublety. T & T gives Blackwell more freedom still, and his solo is both long and adventurous, while the rest of quartet is no less thrilling. LaFaro demonstrates why he was already so highly rated on C&D, where his mesmerising bowed bass solo brings excitement on every listen, matched by a rather straight solo from Coleman, updating Bird through his own modernist traditions. On this re-issue a track not included on the original release is a welcome addition, the long and hypnotic Proof Readers has long been a favourite with Coleman collectors and now we can all enjoy it. Diverse liner notes only add to the great pleasure this album brings, and it stands the test of time well. Few jazz artists in the modern age manage to reach these heights and there is no doubting that this compelling record will continue to captivate many generations to come. Recommended.
