Although it took me a while to be convinced on the merrits of Goodshirt's debut 'Good', I got there in the end, and now rate the band as one of the more creatively interesting commercial pop/rock outfits (you know, the Feelers, Stellar's, Fur Patrol's, Pacifier's, etc) currently at work in New Zealand. Excellent singles (and video's I might add) showed this band to have a genuine desire to make original pop music with tasty new-wavish type twists and a whole heap of style. So to the follow-up ? Well first single "Buck It Up" is a corker (reminds me a little of The Cars actually - you know, off the good first album), but the rest of the album isn't far behind, with other highlights including the Pixie-ish "Not That Far", "Dumb Day", "Cement", "How Will I See You", potential hit single "Lucy" and the title track finale. The band have certainly grown more confident in their songwriting ability, pushing the listener a little harder this time around, which usually bodes well for continued play time (on my stereo anyway), and sometimes a little substance just works wonders. The result - a very good album from a New Zealand band that continue to impress and genuinely belong on the world stage - and good luck to 'em I say. Recommended. |
