Don't be fooled by the title, this neither sounds like the Eagles or Death Metal, and is in fact the new side project of Queen Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme, here known as Baby Duck, and one J Devil Huge, who has already garnered a reputation for outrageous stage antics and being a bit of a hit with the ladies. Completing the line-up (although numerous guests appear throughout) is Homme's longtime Desert Session's collaborator Alain Johannnes who handles the recording and also plays piano and sings a little. The music is endearingly shambolic - opener "I Only Want You" sounds like T.Rex with Mr Devil Huge doing a very fine Bolan impersonation indeed, complete with killer hook, it is the sort of rock n' roll you can't help but like. "Flames Go Higher" is just as essential with cheesy lyrics about black haired girls and souls on fire, it's outrageously fun - all the things a dirty old rocker should love. Much of the album features stolen riffs and tribute like songwriting but the only proper cover, "Stuck In The Middle", (or Metal) is a highlight, its catchy chorus line washed over with noise and feedback, and definitely not alternative country. "Already Died" is another standout, a more reflective moment in the context of the album, sort of like Sebadoh without the emotional baggage. Never anything less than a good time, 'Peace, Love, Death Metal' is all the things most of us want from rock, this ain't Mars Volta but is just as thrilling in it's own way. Although the sound may be retro this excellent record has an edge very few bands in the current rock scene have. If you enjoy anything between the White Stripes and Queens Of The Stone Age, or just dig cool rock, then you simply must must own this. In an industry of overblown hype where you get the feeling that bands often fancy themselves as the future of rock n' roll, the Eagles Of Death Metal are just doing what they wanna do, and doing so with complete success. This is easily one of the best rocks records of 2004. Highly recommended.
