The Windy City Strugglers are kind of like a Wellington (New Zealand) "super group", featuring local legends such as Bill Lake, Rick Bryant, Andrew Delahunty, Nick Bollinger and Geoff Rashbrooke. The vocals are handled by both Lake and Bryant, while the twelve tracks on display here are all originals, but with a decidedly blues bent. However don't be mislead, this is not heavy handed imitation electric chicago blues but more the melodic county-blues end of things, often based around superb acoustic backing and with plenty of heartfelt passion and soul. If you're looking for an easy comparision think of the likes of Ry Cooder ('Chicken Skin Music', 'Borderline', etc), this is music that is as timeless as it is easily enjoyable, bringing pleasure both to the players and any listener who enjoys gently rollicking and emotional "roots" music. And these guys are well worth checking live too if you get the chance. Recommended. |
